Quilting Questions
Every month I choose one of your questions to answer here. This month, we're talking about thread.
Q: What's the difference between cotton thread and polyester thread? - Anita
A: I love this question. There are several differences between cotton and polyester, the most obvious being that cotton is a 100% natural fibre while polyester is synthetic.
The more functional differences are that polyester is stronger and more durable. Polyester is also less likely to shrink. However, polyester is essentially plastic and so there are environmental and health concerns for a lot of people.
Cotton on the other hand, is natural and will eventually compost when the item it's made with is no longer in use. Cotton is also heat resistance, so if you're making items for the kitchen like pot holders, you'll need to use cotton to ensure that you don't have any melting threads.
This is where knowing how your finished item will be used is so important. Polyester is great for things that will need to be washed frequently, while cotton is great for heirlooms and kitchen items like pot holders.
